Richmond Council Meeting Dec. 17

A special meeting of the Richmond council about the Garden City Lands was held on Monday, Dec. 17. There was practically no notice given, and the meeting was at an inconvenient time, 4 p.m. Nevertheless, the crowd filled and overflowed the Anderson Room at City Hall. The meeting was essentially for council to approve the City applying again to the Agricultural Land Commission to get the Garden City lands removed from the ALR. Although the resolution passed, three councillors voted against it. Originally, Harold Steves was the only councillor standing up for the lands and the ALR. This time Coun. Linda Barnes and Coun. Sue Halsey-Brandt joined them. The 6-3 vote to go ahead with the ALR-removal application went against the evident preference of most in attendance.

The Opinion page of the Richmond Review website has posted Harold Steves’ thorough analysis and proposal, as presented at the meeting. It includes discussion of three other resolutions that passed at the meeting.
