Btk gypsy moth spraying

Update, June 1, 2010: The Btk gypsy moth sraying in Richmond, BC, was completed today.

The Garden City Lands Coalition doesn’t take a position on each environmental issue but does encourage awareness of a range of green issues and green events. We often hear from citizens about such matters, especially ones that affect Richmond, BC, or British Columbia. Here is a call for action that just arrived at the coalition’s email address:

Hello, I am shocked to read Richmond News Jan 08.2010 “aerial  pesticide spray  proposed.” Most places this stuff is off limits, and here they try to do it again. Is that Richmond council out of their mind? What can we do in order to prevent it?

I am buying most of my product organically,  spending my hard-earned money in order to remain healthy, and now I cannot go outside without  having to smell Btk, losing our singing birds, etc. My crop is just coming up, and it will be sprayed, with a ten-day break between dousings. The only thing my family can do is leaving richmond for the time being and returning when it is all over, meaning this year I will leave my fields barren.

What can we do? We must protest in masses. It cannot be tolerated.

BTK is a spray that is permitted for use on organic farms. It is a naturally occurring bacterium that only targets the larvae of moths and butterflies. While I understand that aerial spraying means that other houses and land will be affected, BTK breaks down almost instantaneously in sunlight and is not persistent in the environment.

There is no need to not plant or abandon farmland. It does not impact birds, mammals, or even other insects.

The following comment was sent by email by Otto Langer, MSc:

I have a couple of degrees in environmental\fisheries biology and worked in the Federal Government and the David Suzuki Foundation for 35 years.

Over 20 years ago I was responsible for getting YVR to stop using pesticides in an irresponsible manner and stopped Richmond from using chemicals in their ditches to control mosquitoes and vegetation growth.

I am now retired and gardening and growing food in Richmond as one of my main hobbies. I also own 160 acres of forest\farmland in Alberta and keep it primitive for wildlife purposes. As a fishery pesticide biologist in Department of Fisheries and a contaminants biologist in Environment Canada I was involved in evaluating BT in the late 1970s.

I found no acute impact on juvenile salmon when this material was applied to them in bioassays in abnormally large amounts ie by the teaspoonfull. It has been used by many gardeners over many years to combat cabbage worms and such moth-butterfly related insect pests that eat up our vegetables. I also observed the large BT programs conducted in Vancouver and in Richmond in about 1979.

My Richmond lot and garden was sprayed by this agent by aircraft about that time and I did not see any negative impact on the wildlife on my nature friendly lot in central Richmond. I indeed see it as a pest control agent that can be considered as near pastoral organic (vs industrial) providing it is used responsibly. It is a natural agent but formulated for spray use. I say this because it will kill all members of the moth-butterfly family (Lepidoptera) in their juvenile caterpillar stage. Therefore using in on a few plants is more friendly then on an entire landscape. However, the last thing we want is a large infestation of gypsy moth that will spread everywhere.

I will not do anything to object or oppose this gypsy moth control program using BT. This is the best alternative to the use of nasty chemicals such as orthene or malathion etc. that will kill many species well beyond the Lepidoptera family. However, as part of the program Richmond should insist on a good program of monitoring such as the use of simple soap trays for collecting all the moths etc that drop out of neighborhood trees during any application program.

Gyspy moth population will naturally peak and then subside without any intervention, they really do come and then go in a single season without such measures, that’s why they are called gypsey moths. The targeted region is particularly absent of trees and vegetation as it includes the largest paved and roofed structures such as Aberdeen and Landsdowne. Why say goodbye to all the butterflies and then the songbirds and simultaneously dose our young infants and pregnant mothers and every living thing with a known toxin that states clearly on the bottle to avoid all exposure to children and animals. Besides, the moths are in the trees, not the parking lots that will be sprayed, why not cover Terra Nova first?

Otto, it’s been a long struggle over many years of your life, how sad that you’ve now lost your energy to protect the biosphere, please enjoy your much earned retirement, but please, do not resign from the fact that there are still youthful people ready to take on the mantle of protecting our lands and yours, what they need is encouragent from you and those like you, please revive a little of that fire to ignite some youth into protective action. Richmond had the best chance in all of Canada to reach a Blue Zone status, at least up until this very sad day.

This statement is misleading and factually inaccurate, it neglects all the published research indicating the toxicity of Foray 48B and it’s derived impact on species higher up on the food chain.

One big additional factor, the Btk is actually a Trojan Horse, it is a small fraction of the components of the Foray 48B. They tout the safety of Btk, though in truth in itself in these concentrations it is a known pathogen and mutagen, but further, it is the other chemicals that appear to be far worse, according to UBC scientists and many others who have tested or reverse engineered the mixture, and these ingredients are now protected by “law” and not even your Provincial ministers can find out what is in there, not even the PM of Canada can help you. This story has repeated around the world for two decades, Richmond is just the latest victim. The former Abbott Labs executives are now in the government creating and pushing these “laws” that require these sprayings. They also manufacture, at great profit, the flame retardants that you are legally required to inhale in your new mattresses, and some of these PDBE’s may well also be in the Foray 48B. Then twenty years later as your hyperthyroid conditions and auto-immune reactions arise and cancers develop, the very same company that makes the poisons they spray you with will then sell you the chemotherapy drugs that you will slowly use to prolong your demise, barely living as you are finally poisoned in a “fight against” cancer, again to the tune of immense profits for the mass produced chemical that are no cure. These constitute the source of disease, the slow and continuous dosage of the poisin and finally the ending with a few years of drips from the chemo drugs, all made by the same company. Do not be surprised when you find that Abbott Labs has infiltrated the government, former execs and shareholders in Ministerial and Provincial as well as National positions, created these laws, spray the population, treat the lumber with chemical, soak your adult and crib mattresses in PDBE’s, and worse and then manufacture the chemical to cure your cancer, all under one roof, to the tune of immense profit. Ever wonder why over 1 Billion dollars are given to the Canadian Government and Abbott Labs from even other sources, who also, by the way, developed the GMOs and are presently eliminating the availability of natural seed stock.
My family and I have just returned since evacuating before the spraying and I am still so saddened and sickened about what has happened and will continue next year and for as long as they can get away with it. It has occured in New Zealand, Victoria, Vancouver, Washington State, Oregon, and always with the same motis operandi, a stealthy and quick order, sometimes an executive order, that cannot legally be stayed, and this continues until the people rise up and demand it to stop, it is chemical and biological warfare against you in the name of profit, the laws requiring the spraying and allowing the foregoance of environmental and health priorites are created and enforced by former Abbot Labs execs and directors who are employed in the government and make these “laws.” Perhaps you have read the account of the gentleman who coughed blood for the seven weeks of spraying, which, by the way, is a documented known consequence for some in the population, not to mention, spontaneous abortions, hyper and hypothyroidism in pregnant women, increased auto-immune disorder and even long term increase is MS rates.

I am a bioloigist too, and I agree with Otto’s statements. The spraying program is a biological control, not chemical. BT is a bacteria that selectively infects and kills gypsy moth larvae.

    • 8
      Doc C Says:

This is a factually false statement, please read the studies posted at McGill University and other scientific journals. BT is toxic when administered in larger doses than one receives when turning a little soil. Additionally, BT is only a fraction of the content of Foray 48B, a chemical pesticide with known and clealy stated warnings on the bottle to avoid all exposure to children and pets

    Arzeena Says:

If anything, people should be up in arms that the Province still allows stores to sell really toxic chemicals to home owners who have little or no training on how to apply them. The Canadian Cancer Society is advocating for a provincial ban on cosmetic pesticides, similar to the one in Ontario & Quebec (but actually much stronger!). I would encourage anyone concerned about this topic to visit http://advocate.ccsbcy.ca/

    Claude Says:

Unfortunately, many scientists are not aware that bacillus thuringiensis is probably not as benign as it first appeared. There is plenty of recent circumstantial evidence that variants of Bt, in particular Btk, can cause allergic sensitization, can stay alive in human nasal passages and the gut for some time, exchange their toxin-producing plasmids with other bacteria, could cause long-term and subtle respiratory damage, can cause gastroenteritis, and other effects. There never seems to be any money for longitudinal studies or follow-ups to verify that these known phenomena cause lasting damage to humans, but there is plenty of evidence to invoke a Precautionary Principle approach.

In general, aerial sprayings in the West are unnecessary overreactions, triggered by a rigid protocol that was more or less arbitrarily arrived at. There are other methods that are almost certainly safer and reduce the exposure of the human population. This is a human rights issue, as the heavily-sprayed population in New Zealand has maintained.

For a more comprehensive picture, see the article at http://www.pesticide.org/btk.pdf, or a shorter, more technical survey at http://www.nosprayzone.org/pesticides/NSZPaper.pdf .

    M. Smart Says:

I will say that I think this has all got out of hand. It’s just bacteria, not some weird chemical formulation designed to kill everything. When you realize that the way this stuff works is by neutralizing the digestive function in the little buggers it suddenly becomes less scary.

I’ll give a quick 101: caterpillars have an alkaline digestive tract, as opposed to acidic like us, and the bacteria simply produces acid. Because they produce acid, the breakdown of material in the guts becomes a lot harder which causes starvation. The caterpillar doesn’t die if they don’t eat the foliage covered in the Btk.

I really doubt all that many people are allergic to this stuff. People over think things and then they believe they are having symptoms of something or another when they’re just having a panic attack.

Because of all this, I’d be more worried about the off-gassing of paint.

    • 12
      Claude Says:

Well, anthrax is also “just a bacteria” and, BTW, it is exactly the same in structure as Btk, differing by one organelle. And while Btk reproduction is inhibited by acidic environments, the human digestive tract is apparently not acidic enough – the bacteria in cyst form make it through the stomach alive and then can reproduce in the gut. See http://www.nosprayzone.org/pesticides/NSZPaper.pdf .

Because the organism is alive and can reproduce, in some ways it could be more unpredictable and insidious than chemical pesticides. And what I worry about is not people having psychosomatic symptoms, but a long-term problem that might not begin for a period of time, and therefore be difficult to connect.

For instance, a recent research paper from Denmark determined that some fruits, vegetables and processed foodstuffs contain the same Btk and/or toxins produced by Btk found in sprays at high levels, and that these bacteria were likely increasing the incidence of gastrointestinal illnesses in developed countries.

      • 14
        Claude Says:

Well, I have read them, and I am afraid they pose the same question – if you don’t do the research and look at papers using a multidisciplinary approach, you can come to the conclusion that Btk pesticides are benign. This pattern has been repeated many times with chemical pesticides, with Bt-based biocides, and we can now see it playing out with, for instance, GMOs. There is plenty of research indicating many GMOs are not benign, but many in the scientific community take a narrow view and refuse to consider information from outside their area of expertise. This is how we are all ending up in a big experiment – one that is poorly controlled, with no protocol and no data collection. And without data, it can always be claimed that there is no harm.

    L Jones Says:

BTK is a bacterium that is almost identical in genetic material to the bacillus cereus, the one that cause food poisoning, and is the same species as Anthrax. To suggest that because BT is natural, therefore its harmless is like saying typhus and staphloycoccus , pneumonia and other disease causing bacteria are OK because they are natural.

Research studies indicate that staying indoors is of no assistance because within 5 hrs of spraying, the indoor environment is more toxic than the outdoor environment and remains this way for 10 days. People who have eated BTK by touching contaminated surfaces or ingesting food develop gastro illness, and it remains in the digestive tract for some time, just like in the moths digestive tract. Many serious diseases are thought to have biological triggers and exposure and there are no long term studies to indicate BTK is safe to use.

There are plenty of cases in the lower mainland where people with open wounds, or decreased immunity were hospitalized with serious BT wound infections after ariel spray occurred. In fact BTK spraying has been ordered to be stopped on Vancouver Island and in Ontario because its affects are unkown and unstudied, and the it is now thought to be completely ineffective against the gypsy moth. Health Canada even payed for people at risk to leave the spray targent zone in Parksville. There are pheremone alternative baits available, and this BTK aerial spray is based upon antiquated science.

Let’s not forget that it was doctors who readily agreed to euthanize disabled and mentally ill persons under Hitler’s governement sponsered propoganda war. Or the recent H1N1 scandal whereby all the public was told to accept this vaccine by the government of Canada, while Baxter shipments were being contaminated with bird flu, and vaccine was skipping all the proper testing protocal because the WHO lowered the testing criteria one year earlier, thus permitting vaccine manufacturers to skip costly test protocols to permit bigger profit.

STOP the Spray if you don’t wish to be a guinea pig.

While it may be true that anthrax and Bacillus thuringiensis are related, one must also remember that tomatoes are closely related to deadly nightshade and angel’s trumpet. Does that stop you or anyone else from eating tomatoes?

Any farmer you’ll ever meet will also tell you that pheromone traps are A) Expensive, and B) Ineffective. You use them for monitoring population levels in a given area. What “science” is one rely on in such a situation? I suggest that you go to a website that sells these things and then multiply that by twenty thousand (at least) for an idea of the costs involved.

Lastly, your attack on the medical profession is completely uncalled for. You obviously have no conception of why the Holocaust happened and you should be deeply ashamed of yourself for twisting facts. If you are going to blatantly lie like that you might as well just deny that it ever happened.

Lawyer Andrew Gage of West Coast Environmental Law has come up with a new angle on pesticide spraying. He was prompted by the Btk spraying but became more conscious of a siginificant point that applies more broadly to all pesticide spraying in British Columbia. M. Smart Says:

    L. Jones,

“Ionizing radiation was first used on the island of Curacao in 1954 to eradicate the screwworm which had had devastating effects on livestock and wildlife. In this process, male insects are placed in a shielded container containing a gamma ray emitting a radioactive isotope of either cobalt-60 or cesium-137. While in the chamber, low doses of gamma radiation sexually sterilize the insects which are then released back into the wild. When the insects mate, no offspring are produced, effectively controlling the population. This technology has proven to be effective, safe and environmentally friendly because it releases no chemical, biological or nuclear agents into the environment. Currently, this technology is being used in the United States, Mexico, and parts of Africa. ”

    So your point was?

The problem here is that it costs millions to carry out and would thus make this options a no-go.

And Kewljim, I read the article and it makes no sense that the spray would contain sulphites as sulphites are used to kill bacteria.

    • 22
      Doc C Says:

Miles, you are right, it makes no sense that it would contain sulfites, however, the point is, it really doesn’t need to make sense, there is no sense behind it. And yes, kewljim is scientifically correct, they do add sulfites and/or sulphates, it has to do with providing other aspects to the mixture, not to do with a consistency to preserve the bacteria. They, the sulphites, have already been analyzed and found by independent laboratories, along with many other toxins.

I am a Federal Research Scientist with over thirty years of published and internationally recognized work. Richmond residents, I implore you to WAKE UP!, you will be poisoned. I and my family are now evacuating the region and encourage anyone with an interest in their long term health to do the same. Btk is a known toxin with both acute and long term negative health impacts to human beings and all tested research animals when administered in an unnatural way like aerospraying a population, versus turning a little forest soil with a shovel: please read the information posted at McGill University. Also, Btk is only 17% of the chemical spray Foray 48B, also a known toxic pesticide that has warning on the bottle to avoid all exposure to pets and children. How ironic that after the first year Richmond has accomplished limited pesticide use to protect it’s favorite status as being almost a Blue Zone with an average life span approaching 84 years that we will allow such a violation of public health. It will be a sad day when we look back and see the consequence of this type of pesticide mismanagement on what will once have been the formerly healthiest region of Canada. There are Provincial Ministers living in the region, notice how the boundary of application of the pesticide is well away from their own personal homes. I certainly agree with the statement RICHMOND RESIDENTS – WAKE UP AND DEFEND YOURSELVES. I have to admit I was completly caught up in the olympic fever and did not notice the small add postings in the Local Richmond Newspapers (pge 9 ) advising us in January regarding the permit appliction (Oct. 2009) and approval to spray our city commencing tomorrow morning. I am not a scientist but I do feel that every Richmond resident had a right to some decent attempt by the provincial government and the city of Richmond to get information to us besides burying it in a local newspaper. This would have allowed us as taxpayers the right to gather our own information, well before spray day, and make informed choices as to how to protect ourselves if we felt it necessary. I found out about the spray last week while checking the City if Richmond website for swim hours at our local pool.
I have been on the phone the majority of this week calling Linda Reid’s office (604-775-0891) MLA Richmond East. Alice Wong (604-775-5790) Federal MP. Richmond school board Health and Safety Officer. Rob Howard’s office MLA Richmond Centre (604 678-6880). Richmond City Hall 604-276-4000 and finally the BC Ministry of forests hotline No. I do not agree with this spray especially in a heavily populated area of downtown Richmond. I have been advised that the spray consists of 2.1 % Bacteria/ 90% Water/and 7.9 % Inert Matter considered by Health Canada to be low risk. This inert matter was unknown to the ministry, only Health Canada and the manufacturer have that information. I was told by the Ministry that they had issued media releases to the various news stations continually but because of the lack of interest by the general public the story was not newsworthy. Skeptical on this and am trying to follow up with BCTV, CKNW etc as to when media releases were sent to them. One station has already advised me 0830 28April10 was when they received a notice to air info. They did so on the 6:00pm news but not the early morning or 11:00pm news. I was advised that an open forum did take place On March 25, 2010 in East Richmond and that seven people showed up. In one of the many articles I have read thus far Mayor Brodie was quoted as saying “I do not feel there will be any strong resistance to the government planned spray in Richmond “. Most distrubing is a comment by the Richmond School Board Health and Safety saying that Health Canada advised them that there were no harmful components in the spray however they might want to wash off the swing sets and clean the sand boxes as the spray matter is sticky. If anyone in Richmond would like to give me a hand WE HAVE NINE DAYS OF SPRAYING AHEAD OF US this month please reply to my post. I sincerely do not feel we were provided with adequate information well ahead of tomorrow mornings spray date. In addition I have provided you with several phone numbers. Perhaps we could try for another forum and this time have more then seven richmond residents show up. RICHMOND RESIDENTS – WAKE UP AND DEFEND YOURSELVES!

I awoke to the planes flying above spraying this morning and I have to admit it sounded quite ominous. I am trying to find out more about the spray to understand why they would spray here when apparently they have banned this in other parts of the country? And isn’t is hypocritical to ban residential use of pesticides by the public, but it’s ok when the government does it?

Also I found this comment by Andrew Gage a somewhat disturbing thought:
“But the more fundamental question is – why has the government eliminated the public’s right to appeal the aerial spraying of pesticides over their houses and yards? ”

How are we to get real information on what’s going on when they notify us of the spraying in mainstream media at the last moment, they can’t tell us exactly what the spray contains, and then they remove our ability to appeal?

I did not know much about foray 48 b until May 7th. I have however taken care during spray periods by getting up to close windows before.I do have allergies so I am careful. But on friday last, I had not closed the windows and I was awaken at 6:am to the smell of pesticide in my bedroom and the noise of a plane over head. I felt the effects immediately which included iching and burning nose eyes and throat. These effects are still lingering accompanyed by a headache.I did not expect anything as it is suppose to be safe for all. Apparently although I am not in the spray zone or the plane turning zone the plane needs room to turn during the spray. I cannot imagine the folks on the bus stops and having to go to work or school out in that. Ironically it is Heath Day Week starting May 10 and a walking event in garden city park May 12,will be in the same week with the second run of 3 mornings of spraying starting on May 13.It doesnot finish there, If the weather permits there will be 3rd run with 3 more spray days. It can carry on into June with delays. If they must spray tree do it from the ground you won`t find folks sleeping under trees and the birds will get a chance to move. Folks should feel safe in their beds and homes and streets whether they have allergies or not or if they forget to close the windows. For info on spray dates and delays you may call 1-866-917-5999. They also provide a contact person`s number, a friendly chap he assured me they have contacted hospitals and resident homes and noticies in the paper,to take care. But don`t expect any sympathy, he advised me he stood out on his street in Victoria BC when it was sprayed with no problems. I wished him luck with that, I guess he has no allergies. Thanks for all the info. regards,

If anyone like linda is wondering why they are getting spray in their windows although they are well outside the spray zone – this has been well documented in other sprayings such as Victoria in 1999. The drift zone can be several kilometers outside the spray boundaries. And, it gets in to some extent even if you close your windows.

Authorities often ignore the studies and don’t tell the people outside the spray zone they should worry – but they should.

On Saturday, May 8th, I woke up with a terrible cough and my lungs clogged. I put up with it for two weeks and eventually went to the doctor who told me I had pneumonia. I became suspicious as I have never had a respiratory problem in my life and always been healthy. Considering it did not even start with a cold, I have come to the conclusion that during that week, when Gypsy Moth spraying was done (Wed., Thurs.& Fri.) for which I was not aware of, I had washed all my bedding, put it outside, on the line to dry and then back on my bed. I believe this is where the contamination occurred. I still have the pneumonia one month later and the doctor said it will take at least two more weeks to recover. My nasal passages are affected too. This is a disgrace that the public are not being ‘honestly’ informed. This stuff will kill people. It is very harmful, according to studies done by a mental health professional, Gail McCormick, of Seattle, Wa., and many others who have studied the effects on humans, have come to the same conclusion. This harmful spraying should be stopped immediately, so residents of Richmond, please wake up and let this be known far and wide, for your health’s sake.

You aren’t the only person. I have been coughing uncontrollably for sometime. I have come into contact with several people, friends, clients who have pneumonia, pneumonia like symptoms, bronchial problems, raspy lungs etc. We are definitely being subjected to some form of aerial contaminant… the question is who and why? Every so often i will come out in the morning and see a yellow film of dust on my vehicle, what is that? and why is it only there sometimes, not every day? I am very worried about what i read with regards to gypsy moth spraying, especially since I have never seen a gypsy moth, ever! I think we are being sold the same can of crap the H1N1 came in and once again… WHY? AND WHO?

        Doc C Says:

Ravi, you know why, someone profits, you can find who, the ones who profit. Yes, they manufacture the Foray 48B, they also manufacture the PDBEs to protect you from all the flames your baby produces in their crib, they also manufacture many of the immunizations that have quadrupled the past few years, especially the ones that go into instant mass production on a emergency health alert, they also manufacture most of the pharma drugs that are in litigation over their efficaciousness versus their actual disease treatment, and they also manufacture most of the chemotherapy drugs. They get around environmental health and safety laws, even dosing populations with toxins that exceed known OSHA standards, in the name of commerce and consumer protection, the spraying laws come from the Ministry of Forestry, because a law and restriction was imposed that demands its use in order to sell BC lumber, and yes, they are behind that law too, as well as the laws since 2007 that require you to buy flame retardant soaked mattresses for adults and babies, in the name of consumer safety, but in violation of Health Canada’s and the US OSHA’s own standards, and should you desire a mattress that is free of these chemicals, you are legally obligated to provide a note from your doctor to buy a mattress without the chemicals – unless you go organic and get around the flame rule using wool wrapped exteriors. In time, you will be filled with gmos, and eventually they will try to tell you that even the healthy people of our world must also take the pharmaceuticals they produce, while outlawing your acces to any plant or herb that grows naturally, why, because those are not patentable, but everything they make is patented. Please be aware and beware.

    Ravi,
Maybe you aren’t looking in the right places. They’re there.

    To everyone else,
Take into consideration that just because health problems arise does not mean that there’s any direct correlation. There are many other variables (i.e. pollen) involved. Just because someone can post something on the internet does not mean that he is an authority on the matter.

    • 35
      Ravi Says:

POINT 1…where are they then? If they were such a problem then you would see dozens, hundreds, thousands. I have yet to see one.
I have lived in countries where insect infestation was a real problem… there is no problem here. they talk about the gypsy moths destroying 4000 km of forest a year… in Richmond the only thing destroying habitat is development… maybe they should spray and eliminate real estate agents instead.

Point 2… What is it about Richmond that attracts Gypsy Moths… casinos? Chinese strip malls? Cranberry fields? Tim Hortons? I mean they aren’t going to spray Vancouver, or pitt meadows. Who put the moths in Richmond only?

People have allergic reactions to contaminates and pollutants in their environment. The actual chance of allergies to pollen has remained low through the spray period. Reactions are well documented to pesticides and btk. It is not imaginary nor a panic attack. I know of 3 cases of pnenononia over the spray period. I cannot remember knowing 3 cases prior to this in my life in a one month period.

How do you prove it was the aerial spray 15 1/2 hours over a month? We cannot. Just ask a parent after a nite in hospital with a child with asthma attacks. Their air space effected by who knows what pollutions? We worry about keeping green spaces and eating organically. So how do we stop aerial spraying of so many humans in 2010? So many countries and states have ban it use because of health reasons. NY state has determined the Gypsy a resident as it is now been there so long without any devisation and will not put their residents in risk of spraying foray 48b.

I have tried in vain to have the 2 local papers publish the story of Btk or at least give the risks during the spray period. To help residents be aware and take care getting out to work and school and clean surfaces for children. One paper agreed with my plea but did not print any of my concerns during that time. The other said he had not received any reports of people being adversely effected and would report that if it should happen. He indicated he was amazed at number of residents that choose not to read about things that effect them and complain when it is too late.

I have spoken to many people who were not aware of the aerial spraying in Richmond more than those who knew. As for the MLA`s office of Rob Howard, the gentleman answering was not aware of Richmond being aerial sprayed at that time, and was concerned when he realized his home was on the border of the spray zone. I have not heard back from them since May 7.

The 811 number provided by BC forestry line for health concerns. They were not aware of the aerial spraying or what the product foray 48b or btk was. Nor what to do if you should come incontact with it, at the time I called. They advised to call your doctor. The last message on 1-866-917-5999 BC Forestry line indicates they will study result following this spray period to evaluate and determine next steps to take next year. A permit will be acquired in the fall and it will be announced then. The spray is over for this year, it is not too late to stop 2011 spray.

It was an easy spray for Richmond as far as BC forestry are concerned, they had no resistance. How the residents health is, time will tell or not if it is not documented by doctors. Hopefully not to many sick folks. So how did residents stop aerial spraying in Victoria BC and New Westminister? How do we stop it without a voice before next years aerial spray zone? Do we know who was responsible for this total disregard of human life, a health risk to a city full of people, just to kill moths found in the garden city area? How do we find out who decided our fate in Richmond, for Apr27- May- June1 2010? Any ideas? You could tell BC Heath to document your health concerns. Thanks for any help you can give to avoid next year. You may ask to be notified of their plans by email, if you request it at http://www.for.gov.bc.ca/gypsymoth.

Well the spraying has stopped but the outfall continues, I am still coughing up blood from the spray. I have complained to the Ministry of Environment, Richmond Health Board and the City of Richmond. I find it interesting that the Government introduced this moth in 1869 to North America to produce a hybrid, and now spray to get rid of it. Someone is making lots of money off this spraying. Not only does the dive bombing at 4:50AM on Sunday morning affect us, but for those with breathing problems any microb spray is toxic, and there is so little good air left and many dont understand how little air there is around the Earth, lets be good caretakers and be more cautious in our approach to healthy living without the greed. Its all about money and greed before health issues, Ok so you dont like the moth eating the trees, well maybe someone should look at who brings these in and experiments on them and then finds OH MY how did that get out. Well none of the BIG ONES are listening anyway as I cough my way to work and back home again for over a month now. I can only trust that what goes around comes around for all the lazy irresponsible decision makers who forget we need good air to breathe and good water to drink.

Bigwave, you’re getting it right, please check out some of my recent postings to find out who profits. And then there are the “scientists” with the Fisheries wondering why in the last four years, the salmon have gone? (Victoria and Vancouver spraying ten or so years ago) You might also wonder why Vancouver Island has lost 90% of the honey bees, why there has been a small outbreak of super virus and super bacteria on Vancouver Island. Now we have no butterflies for years in Richmond, will the local bees soon follow suit, will the fish ever return, what will happen to the birds and yes, what about these sensitive human individuals who are our “canary in a coal mine.” The good news is that it is not a large number of people pushing this, it’s just they have immense influence at key points in the government, the chemical manufacturer is adrench in chemically toxic stained money and even more there are even bigger backers contributing to these huge pharma/flame retardant/chemotherapy drugs/pesticide sprays/gmo companies, only three of them though. Who donates the most to Abbot Laboratories, coincidentally, they are also the largest donors to the Government of Canada…we are talking more than one billion to two billion dollars! It buys A LOT of influence.

My son was one of the people in the Richmond Reveiw , wondering if the Gypsy moth spray, made him sick, coughing up blood and wheezing for almost 7 weeks. There was another person in the paper with the exact same symptoms 2 weeks later. I am just wondering if you are that person, or maybe you are the third person with the same problem? I am very interested in finding out if there are more people out there.
Maybe it would be a good idea if people like us and Doc C, and a few others, get organized somehow , to see if something can be done about this problem?

today in the Richmond Review there was an article about a guy who was coughing up blood after the spraying. What is interesting to me is that a friend of mine has had the exact same reaction over the exact same period of time. in the past few weeks so many people have been complaining of problems related to breathing and coughing. we as the residents of richmond really need to stand up against this and stop it now.
It seems to me whenever I read the paper these days i am learning about more and more bullsh#t our government is foisting on us, be it the taxation, the cutting of education, the $1billion they are spending on the G20 security… etc. I for one am feeling very sick and tired of seeing my tax dollars misappropriated and being treated like a second class citizen wherever I go. i am ready to take some action but I cannot do it alone, I propose all of those that are feeling this way get together and discuss some of these issues in an effort to make a stand against this nonsense. Please get in touch with me at thimble at shaw dot ca if you are interested in making a lasting change.

I tried to post a comment here so it could be seen by the more recent folks posting but it ended up above, I hope you might take the opportunity to read the June 26 comments above regarding some of the “why” this is happening as well as the health concerns. Thanks to all who are waking up and attempting to face this sickening situation, this is very very real. Did you know that the residue of the spray has been measured to remain in the hospital’s equipment for months, to re-disperse in the air for a year. Yes, RGH was right there at the edge of the spray zone and in a region known to have substantial drift. RICHMOND RESIDENTS – WAKE UP AND DEFEND YOURSELVES! MOTHERS PLEASE DEFEND YOUR BABIES! When Dave Decarlo read about the plight of Lee Majeau, the local man who fears the gypsy moth spraying in April and May caused him to cough up blood for seven weeks, he couldn’t believe his eyes.

“I was so thrilled to see there was somebody taking the reins on this,” Decarlo told The Richmond Review this week. “It’s almost exactly like what I was living”

Like Majeau, it was a couple of days after the spraying commenced on April 30 that he began to cough up blood and went to a local walk-in clinic. While Decarlo suffers from asthma, the 27-year-old Majeau hasn’t had a problem with asthma since he was a youngster.

Both men received antibiotics for what was suspected to be some sort of infection, but in neither case did it help.

Only now have Decarlo’s symptoms begun to subside to the point he’s planning to return to his work next week at the nearby Radisson Hotel Vancouver Airport.

According to Health Canada, there have been four complaints made regarding the gypsy moth spraying.

Aside from the complaints of Decarlo and Majeau, a local woman complained of respiratory problems.

Although she isn’t named in the Health Canada database, the woman reported her asthma attack a week after the spraying began. She lives one kilometre from the spray zone and had left her window open at the time of spraying.

She has a history of asthma, underwent a chest X-ray, and received ventilation as well as a nebulizer treatment at the emergency room at Richmond Hospital.

Another woman who lives 10 kilometres outside the spray zone complained to Health Canada about malaise and muscle weakness.

Decarlo said it wasn’t small amounts of blood that he began coughing up.

He describes it as “paper rolls of blood”, and his illness has been draining both physically and mentally.

Unlike Majeau, who isn’t quite so sure the Btk/Foray 48B spraying is to blame—though numerous other possibilities have been ruled out by his doctors after a battery of tests—Decarlo is convinced.

“I know it was the gypsy moth spray,” he said as he coughed up more phlegm and spat into the water at the marina where he resides. “Honest to god, this has just been a killer to me.”

Decarlo said despite requesting that he be notified about the dates and times of the spraying, that wasn’t done.

Meanwhile, Lee Majeau’s efforts to find a definitive answer for the cause of his illness took a step forward.

Officials from both Health Canada and Valent Biosciences Inc., the U.S.-based manufacturer of the spray, urged Majeau’s medical doctor to make a formal request for a sample of the Btk.

Health Canada will release a complete breakdown of the contents of the spray to Majeau’s doctor, while Valent’s global business manager Ernest Dankwa, said his company would turn over a sample for testing to rule out the spray as the cause.

Dankwa acknowledged this isn’t the first time complaints of this type have been made.

Decarlo said there are a lot of people in Richmond who suffer from asthma, and the fine nature of the gypsy moth spray alone may be enough to trigger an asthma attack.

    SLC Says:

I was living in North Vancouver when the first spraying of the Gypsy Moth began way back in the 80’s. I had a job in Vancouver and took the bus, so was up and outside at thr bus stop, when the planes did their low spray fly overs. Every time and every year after, I got covered with the “harmless” pesticides. I couldn’t stay indoors. It was sticky, and horrible tasting and smelling. I can’t count the times I got covered, but it was every time there was a scheduled low fly spraying. This went on for years.

Why a city, I will never know. I became sick. Skin, problems, lost most of my hair, ( never grew back ), asthma, nose bleeds, lung infections. Mom developed oral cancer.

My family moved away in 1992 to Kelowna, but my health steadily declined. Thyroid problems, sinus problems and skin problems continued. Before we moved, I had a special needs son. A few years after we moved, had a special needs daughter who ended up dying.

Now at 51 I guess that is old to Government Officials, I have had many surgeries, and deal with a fairly rare form of Neurological Disease that left untreated will kill me within the next 3-4 years or less. There is one thing that offers hope, a test for brain mapping. We know what areas of my brain that are dead, but to find the areas that are dying and unaffected would offer a course of treatment. But here is the funny one. We don’t have a two tiered health system or do we? I was told by my Neurologist said we all have to die and the Government has denied paying for this test, but you can pay for it if you want it. I can’t afford it. I lost my job because of time needed for test and appointments and this test would cost the Health Care an incredible amount of $600. I’m told I could be hit by a bus and why fight or worry about. Soon there will be nothing to worry about anyway. I didn’t join in on the Doctor’s humour.

I have dreams. I was training to be a Public Speaker. My son is fantastic and I know he will find a wife and have a family. I will not see him married or hold my grandchildren without . Why fight nature…….well I wonder after all these years and low fly spraying in Vancouver, is this ‘harmless Gypsy Moth spray”, killing me? What if there was no spraying, what would my life be like today? If it was so threatening, why not spray the regions we receive the export supplies from before they are shipped? Why should we pay and also suffer the health effects contolling an imported bug?

You know, I may be simple, I’m not a scientist, but would these “experts” lick the yellow film off cars or drink a cup of this harmless liquid? Why did the birds stop singing where did the butterflies go for weeks after the spraying stopped in my back yard?
We had traps for these moths on our property. Never saw one. And I wanted to. I wanted to see this criminal causing the cost of all this.

I may not be important to “Officials, the Government or the Health Care System”, but I am important to my son, not a Gypsy Moth. Why fight nature, don’t want to, but I didn’t have a choice about the spraying, but the Government has a choice to positively impact my health, comfort and many lives. Please help me live a bit longer. I just want to hold my first grandchild. Is that too much to ask?
