Happy birthday, Earth Day!

At an Earth Day celebration, Richmond School Trustee Carol Day chats with Delta-Richmond East MP John Cummins in the centre while Shane McMillan and Olga Tkatcheva enjoy the environment. Notice the list of "Green actions you can start today" on the sign.

Earth Day, you first saw the light of day on April 22, 1970. You’re 40 today! Happy birthday, Earth Day!

And looking good! Maybe it’s because you’ve always been a day with a mission:

Awareness and appreciation of Earth’s environment

It’s a bit late to change your name, Earth Day, but you deserve more than one day to celebrate. All year would be good, and we’ll get there—in small steps.

Here in Richmond, we’ll be celebrating Earth Day on Saturday, April 24. The Garden City Lands Coalition will be setting up a booth under a tent at Terra Nova Rural Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. We have a brand new version of our brochure to pass out, and we’re looking forward to talking to everyone. It’s great for people of all ages, and it’s a perfect location. There’s more information on the City of Richmond site.

I already celebrated today, April 22, 2010, with a long breakfast event at the Hyatt Regency, Competing Visions of the Agricultural Land Reserve in Metro Vancouver. It was excellent. I know you were there in spirit, Earth Day, and I’ll tell the world about it on this blog soon.

Over in Delta, our Burns Bog Conservation Society friends will be celebrating Earth Day with their Pilgrimage to Burns Bog on Sunday, April 25, starting at 1:30.

I’d like to tell you more, but I know you have a full day. As people over 40 like to say, “Life begins at forty!”

So, once again, happy birthday, Earth Day!
And millions more!
